Legion of Valor Lesson Plans Topic: Black Troops in the Civil War Abstract: In this lesson, students, working individually, with partners or small groups, will use various websites to investigate the role of Black soldiers and Black regiments in the American Civil War. The student activities are independent of one another and do not need to be completed in order or even by all students. Each activity culminates in a student created product. Students will read accounts of the battles fought in by Black regiments, especially the Battle of Cripens Farm and the Battle of Fort Wagner, through the documents on the Legion of Valor website and other internet sites. It is to be noted that Medals of Honor were presented to Black soldiers in both of these battles. Topic: Andrew's Raiders: The Great Locomotive Chase and the roles of Civilian Spies Abstract: In this lesson, students, working individually, with partners or small groups, will use various websites to investigate the role of Andrew's Raiders, a group of civilian and military spies in the American Civil War. The student activities are independent of one another and do not need to be completed in order or even by all students. Each activity culminates in a student created product. Students will read accounts of the Great Locomotive Chase, through the documents on the Legion of Valor website and other internet sites. It is to be noted that Medals of Honor were presented to some of the members of Andrew's Raiders, but the civilian participants were not eligible Topic: Civil War Medicine Abstract: In this lesson, students, working individually, with partners or small groups, will use various websites to investigate the role medicine and doctors played during the American Civil War. The student activities are independent of one another and do not need to be completed in order or even by all students. Each activity culminates in a student created product. Students will read accounts of surgeons and doctors, through the documents on the Legion of Valor website and other internet sites. It is to be noted that Medals of Honor were presented to doctors and surgeons during the Civil War. Topic: The Battle for San Juan Hill: Santiago, Cuba, July 1, 1898 Abstract: In this lesson, students, working individually, with partners or small groups, will use various websites to investigate the role Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders played during the Spanish-American War. The student activities are independent of one another and do not need to be completed in order or even by all students. Each activity culminates in a student created product. Students will read accounts of cavalry and infantry soldiers, through the documents on the Legion of Valor website and other internet sites. It is to be noted that Medals of Honor were presented to many of the participants in the Battle for San Juan Hill. Topic: The Role of African American soldiers in World War II Abstract: In this lesson, students, working individually, with partners or small groups, will use various websites to investigate the role African American soldiers played during World War II. The student activities are independent of one another and do not need to be completed in order or even by all students. Each activity culminates in a student created product. Students will read accounts of the African American soldiers, through the documents on the Legion of Valor website and other internet sites. It is to be noted that no Medals of Honor were presented to African American soldiers during World War II.
